Dental binoculars (binocular magnifiers) - accurate diagnosis and timely treatment.

Dental binoculars can ensure the quality of diagnostics, correct diagnosis, detection of tooth diseases in the early stages. Without exaggeration, such equipment can be called one of the most necessary in the arsenal of a modern doctor who cares about his patients.

Such a device has several functions. The most important task of binoculars is to show the doctor a magnified image for a more accurate assessment of the clinical picture. The power of magnification in most models of modern binoculars is 2,5 X. Optics with increased power of magnification are 3,5 X. Thus, even minor damage to tooth enamel, tooth injuries, all anatomical features of dental canals that cannot be seen with the naked eye become visible.

Advantages of dental binoculars:

  • Ability to detect the disease in the early stages. For example, you can see a carious spot, which will become a serious problem in the future, or even the smallest damage to the enamel - a microcrack.
  • More accurate diagnosis. Thanks to modern binoculars, it is easier to establish the causes of the disease, as well as correctly assign a diagnosis for successful treatment.
  • A wide field of vision for a dentist. Binoculars allow you to assess the condition of the teeth in the "blind zones" of the oral cavity, which remain inaccessible without them. This allows not only to comprehensively determine the condition of the teeth and oral cavity, but also to prevent the development of chronic processes.

And also — comfortable use. Thanks to the binoculars, you can conveniently conduct an examination and diagnosis.

How to choose dental binoculars

The modern market of dental equipment offers many models of binoculars that differ in characteristics. The optimal device provides a high-quality examination, enlarges the image to the required size, allows you to see the smallest areas of the oral cavity, and is also comfortable during use - it does not disturb the dentist and the patient.

According to placement (attachment point), binoculars are:

  • Fixed on the frame - this type is called "binocular glasses". They look like regular glasses, but with an optical device attached. The advantage of such models is that, if necessary, you can lift the additional part and simply stay in glasses that can be selected according to your vision.
  • Built-in These are devices with an optical part built into the glasses. This allows you to reduce the load on the bridge of the nose. The optics in such models are located as close as possible to the pupil of the eye, which is also very convenient during work.
  • Attached to the helmet. The entire structure has the shape of a helmet and is attached directly to the head. The advantage of such binoculars is that they distribute weight more evenly than other models.

But the most important criterion for choosing dental binoculars is not their placement, but the type of magnification system. Modern models use two systems — Galileo or Kepler.

The Galileo system is a compact and lightweight pair of binoculars with a magnification of up to 3.8x. They have a simplified design, let in a lot of light: in some cases, dentists can work with them without additional lighting. But we recommend using an illuminator in any case (to ensure greater accuracy).

Another advantage of models with the Galileo system is significantly less weight. Such binoculars hardly put pressure on the bridge of the nose.

The Kepler system (prismatic system) is a more massive and heavy pair of binoculars with a prism system that allows you to get a magnification of up to 8X. Advantages of the system:

  • the image is not distorted, is clear and sharp;
  • more significant increase than in binoculars with the Galileo system.
  • Significant working field and depth of field.

The disadvantages of the system can be considered its heavy weight and higher price. However, Kepler optical systems are most often used by dentists.

Another parameter that you should pay attention to when choosing dental binoculars is the working distance. Or the distance from the eye to the focus point. This parameter significantly affects the ergonomics of work. If the working distance is too small, you will have to either raise the chair with the patient higher or bend down to him. In the first case, there will be an extra load on the shoulders and forearms.

Additional parameters to pay attention to when choosing optics are:

  • The peculiarity of lens manufacturing is that in high-quality binoculars, they are manufactured using High Resolution technology. This parameter is indicated either in the labeling of the optics or in the description attached to it.
  • Lenses must have a special coating that removes light reflections (up to 0,3-0,5%). This is important for image clarity.
  • The system must meet global standards of moisture and dust resistance not lower than IP 65.

Also consider that the lenses of dental binoculars must be achromatic. This will guarantee accurate color rendering of the image and clarity of its contours.

Dental binoculars: advantages of using binoculars

  • Binoculars with a magnification of 3,5 times are suitable for dentists who specialize in the manufacture and installation of dental implants. It is important that the model you choose is equipped with a powerful backlight to ensure the accuracy of the review.
  • Binoculars with a magnification of 2 and 2,5 times are most often used in restorative and orthopedic dentistry. Since the work is often quite long, it is worth choosing a model with a convenient attachment and light weight. An additional advantage will be soft, adjustable lighting.
  • Optical systems with 4-6 times magnification are optimal for endodontists. Binoculars must be equipped with a powerful focused light.
  • When using binoculars, use protective lenses or optical shields.
